The xTool F1 Ultra is not the cheapest way to engrave acrylic. It shouldn't be. The xTool F1 Ultra's 20W fiber & diode dual-laser design lets you mark metal with fiber and engrave acrylic with diode, without owning two separate lasers. If your shop does both metal marking and acrylic work, this is the most honest cost-per-capability buy I've priced in this class. If you only ever engrave acrylic, it's probably overkill.

I say this as the person who handles procurement for a 14-person fabrication shop. For six years, I've tracked every major purchase in a cost spreadsheet, around $180,000 in equipment, tooling, and maintenance. I don't compare sticker prices. I compare total cost of ownership.

I Had the Buying Logic Backwards at First

When I first started researching desktop laser engraving, I assumed the smart move was to buy a cheap diode laser for acrylic, then rent a fiber marker on the rare weeks we needed metal jobs. It still has limits. It won't replace a CO2 laser for large-format acrylic cutting, and it won't replace a CNC router for deep 3D carving. But for a mixed-material job shop, it covers a lot of ground.

How to Laser Engrave Acrylic: The Process That Works on the F1 Ultra

Now the practical part. The biggest question we get is: can this machine engrave acrylic? Yes, but with conditions. Clear acrylic is the tricky one because blue diode light can pass through it instead of marking it. For repeatable jobs, we use opaque, black, or laser-ready cast acrylic sheets.

Here's the acrylic laser engraving process we use on our floor:

  1. Clean the surface first. Finger oils show up as white spots once the laser hits. Wipe with alcohol and let it dry.
  2. Use cast acrylic for engraving. Extruded acrylic tends to melt and leave rough edges. Cast acrylic gives a clean frosted mark.
  3. Turn on air assist. This is not optional for clean results. Smoke residue will stain the engraving and dull the contrast.
  4. Run a test grid. Our starting point for 3mm black cast acrylic is around 120 mm/s at 40% power. Then we adjust for depth and contrast.
  5. Don't treat it as a cutting system. We occasionally cut 1.5mm acrylic with multiple passes for small prototypes, but the F1 Ultra is a poor substitute if you frequently cut thick sheet.

The key is to treat the first job as a test, not a production run. When we dial in the settings, we record them in a job log. That's what makes the process repeatable.

The xTool F1 Ultra Rotary: An Add-On You Need to Plan For

If your customers want tumblers, bottles, pens, or cylindrical parts engraved, you need the xTool F1 Ultra rotary attachment. It's not in the base box. It's a separate purchase, and its price matters to the total cost.

The real cost of a laser isn't the machine. It's the 'one more thing' purchases you didn't plan for.

When we configured our order, we added the rotary attachment, air assist kit, enclosure, and a honeycomb panel. That raised the total by roughly 35-40% over the bare machine. It looks painful.

But here's what our cost spreadsheet said: standalone 20W fiber marker quotes started around $3,800 (vendor quotes at our shop, Q3 2024), and a separate desktop diode machine was another $400-$700. Buying one F1 Ultra with accessories still came in lower than buying two separate systems. It also saved floor space, software training, and maintenance time.

I appreciate that xTool shows accessory prices up front. I've been through too many purchases where the surprise shows up after checkout. The vendor who lists all fees ahead of time, even if the total looks higher, usually costs less in the end.

Laser Engraver and CNC Router: Where the F1 Ultra Fits

I keep seeing reviews that imply the F1 Ultra can replace a CNC router. It can't. A laser engraver removes material by vaporization. A CNC router physically cuts with a spinning end mill. A laser cannot cut deep pockets or carve 3D profiles reliably.

For acrylic faceplates, ID tags, small signs, and surface engraving, the F1 Ultra is excellent. For recessed letters a quarter-inch deep, use a router. That's not a knock against the F1 Ultra. It's a boundary that protects your expectations.

Where I'd Hesitate Before Recommending It

This is the hard part. The F1 Ultra is not for everyone. If your shop does zero metal marking, you're paying for fiber capability you'll never use. A dedicated diode machine or a used CO2 laser will handle acrylic for less money. If you cut acrylic sheets thicker than 3mm regularly, a CO2 laser is a better fit. If you need production-scale fiber marking all day, a standalone fiber laser might serve you better.

Honestly, I'm not sure why xTool doesn't bundle the rotary and air assist into a single shop-ready package. My best guess: they want the base price to look approachable. If they ever change that, I'll update my opinion.

This worked for us because we're a small job shop with mixed short-run work. If you're a high-volume operation, the calculus is different. Use your own numbers, not a review's.

And when you're shopping, do this: build the full configured quote before you compare anything. Then ask one question. "What's not included?" That's where the trust test starts.
