xTool F1 Ultra Review: Specifications, Metal Cutting, Software, and Best Wood to Laser Engrave

The Short Version

If your shop needs one compact machine for metal engraving, wood marking, and light metal cutting, the xTool F1 Ultra is the best value I've approved in six years of procurement decisions. It is not the cheapest laser on paper. It is the cheapest laser once you count the second machine you won't need to buy.

I'm the procurement manager at a 14-person precision fabrication shop. I handle a roughly $180,000 annual budget for tools, consumables, and vendor services, and I have tracked every equipment purchase for the past six years. That background matters because my default assumption was that dual laser meant mediocre at both. In this case, I was wrong.

If you search for that phrase, you will see thin steel and aluminum being sliced. That is real, but let's define the boundary. The F1 Ultra is not a plasma cutter. It will not cut 1/4-inch steel plate. For our business, that is fine. We cut stainless steel shim stock, thin aluminum tags, brass foil, and thin metal for prototypes. The fiber beam leaves a clean edge on thin material, and the dual-laser setup means you do not have to move the part between metal engraving and wood cutting.

The honest version: if your work is thick metal cutting all day, buy something with more power and a bigger work area. If your work is mostly engraving plus light metal cutting, the F1 Ultra is a serious tool.

Fiber Laser Rust Removal: The Realistic Version

Fiber laser rust removal is a real application, but it has a learning curve. On the F1 Ultra, I remove thin surface rust from steel by setting the fiber beam to low power, increasing scan spacing, and letting the laser do multiple passes. The goal is to lift the rust without engraving the base metal.

Heavy scale? Use a grinder or chemical remover first. Lasers are not magic erasers. For light rust on expensive or delicate parts, though, the fiber beam is a much better option than abrasive blasting.

One safety note: the fiber beam is 1064nm infrared and invisible to the eye. I ordered proper laser safety glasses before the machine arrived. That is a non-negotiable line item.

Best Wood to Laser Engrave: The Shortlist

If you are using the diode beam, the best wood to laser engrave is one with low resin and a tight grain. Our shop's go-to list:

  • Baltic birch plywood - predictable, easy to cut, great for prototype boxes.
  • Basswood - smooth, soft, and very nice for detailed marks.
  • Alder - minimal pitch, good for panels and cabinet work.
  • Cherry - gives a rich dark contrast and looks expensive.

What I avoid: pine, fir, and MDF. Pine and fir have too much resin; the heat creates a sticky buildup on the lens and ugly scorch marks. MDF contains glue that produces unpleasant fumes and a poor cut edge.

The F1 Ultra is not for everyone. If you only cut thick acrylic or wood, a CO2 laser or a higher-power diode is a better match. If you only mark metals, a dedicated fiber machine might give you a bigger work area for the same money. If you need to cut 1/4-inch steel, buy a plasma cutter.

I bought the F1 Ultra because our work is mixed: metal tags one hour, walnut signs the next, and overnight prototypes in between. It earns its space by being the machine we reach for instead of the machine we justify.

Looking back, I should have ordered it earlier. I didn't because I was still on the fence about dual lasers. The delay cost us way more in outsourcing fees than any upcoming version was worth.
