xTool F1 Ultra Laser Engraver Review: A Quality Inspector's Take on Acrylic Settings, Project Ideas, and Honest Limits

In Q1 2024, a batch showed up on a Tuesday. Three hundred aluminum nameplates, all with the same problem: the serial number on plate 17 was smudged, and by plate 212 it was nearly unreadable. We rejected the lot and sent it back. The vendor redid it at their cost, but the delay cost us two weeks on a project that was already tight.

That was the trigger event. I didn't fully understand the value of an in-house laser until a $3,000 order came back wrong and we had no way to fix it without waiting for someone else.

I'm a quality/compliance manager at a custom fabrication shop. Over four years of reviewing engraved and printed parts, I've learned that marking consistency is harder than most people expect. In 2024, I rejected 14% of first deliveries due to marking issues. That number is what made me look for a solution.

Why I looked at the xTool F1 Ultra

The first month was not pretty

Let me be honest: our first month with the F1 Ultra was a lot of trial and error. The first acrylic piece came out with melted edges. Not great, not terrible. Just not acceptable. The software has presets, but presets don't know your material lot, your focus height, or how humid the shop is. We tested on scrap. Lots of scrap.

Why does this matter? Because consistency is the whole job. A mark that looks fine on the first batch can fail on the second if you change one variable. So we started a small settings book: material, thickness, power, speed, passes, air assist, and notes. It made a bigger difference than any machine upgrade.

One pass worked for thin 1.5mm sheets. Two passes gave cleaner edges on 3mm. The edge still needs light clean-up, but it's acceptable for prototype and low-volume production.

Now the honest part: clear acrylic is a different story. The diode laser beam at about 455nm passes through transparent clear material, so you can't cut it the same way. I'm not a laser physicist, so I can't explain the photonics in detail. From our testing, clear material just doesn't absorb enough energy. You need a CO2 laser, or a special 'laserable' acrylic with additives that absorb the wavelength. If you mostly cut clear acrylic, the F1 Ultra is probably not the right tool.

That limitation didn't bother us, because we mostly cut black and dark gray acrylic. But it's worth knowing before you buy.

What the fiber side actually meant for us

The fiber laser is why I kept the machine on the desk instead of sending it back. We mark stainless steel tags, aluminum plates, and some steel tools. The marks are consistent, legible, and hold up to handling.

When I compared our outsourcing costs against in-house material use and labor over one quarter, the difference was larger than I expected. It wasn't just money. It was control. We could run a batch of 10 parts at 4pm and have them ready the next morning.

That comparison changed my view on desktop fiber units. I used to assume a '3d fiber laser' class machine was mandatory for any metal marking. Some projects still need that. But for our tolerance and volume, the F1 Ultra's fiber source is enough.

  • Deep engraving in metal: fiber can mark, but for deep pocket engraving we'd still use an industrial system.
  • Clear acrylic: as I mentioned above, not with the diode laser.
  • Large production runs: the work area is small. For hundreds of large panels, this is not the machine.

That's not a criticism. It's a boundary. I'd rather know the limits than pretend the machine does everything.

Final verdict from a quality inspector

Would I recommend the xTool F1 Ultra? Yes, for small shops that need a reliable desktop dual laser and want to bring marking work in-house. The combination of diode and fiber in one unit is genuinely useful, and the acrylic settings are easy to tune once you understand the material.

Would I recommend it for a large production facility? No. If you're cutting thousands of sheets or deep-engraving metal all day, you're back in 3d fiber laser territory. Get a bigger system.

The test isn't whether a machine has the highest specs. It's whether you can repeat the same quality on part one through part 100. In our shop, the F1 Ultra passes that test. Not perfect, but workable. And that is enough.
